Male Fertility
Male Fertility Acupuncture and Naturopathy in Auckland
Sperm health is not fixed. It can be changed.
If you're looking for male fertility acupuncture in Auckland, chances are the standard semen analysis has either come back with concerns — or come back normal, and yet nothing is happening. Katie Kempthorne is a naturopath and TCM acupuncturist based in Sandringham with 20+ years of clinical experience in reproductive health. Male fertility is half of the picture. It deserves half the investigation.

What the research says about male fertility — and what it means for your treatment.
Sperm health is responsive.
The evidence is clear.
Male factor contributes to fertility challenges in approximately half of all couples struggling to conceive. Yet in most fertility investigations, the woman is assessed comprehensively while the man receives a basic semen analysis measuring count, motility, and morphology. That analysis, while useful, captures only a fraction of what actually determines whether conception occurs — and whether a pregnancy holds.
A 2026 umbrella review of 43 systematic reviews and meta-analyses identified 67 risk factors associated with male infertility and abnormal semen parameters, covering lifestyle, metabolic, environmental, and systemic contributors. The review confirms what clinical practice has shown for years: sperm quality is not a fixed biological trait. It is a dynamic, responsive measure of overall male health — shaped by what a man eats, how he sleeps, what stresses him, what his gut is doing, and how well his cells are producing energy. A network meta-analysis of 23 randomised controlled trials involving 1,917 patients found that L-carnitine, CoQ10, omega-3 fatty acids, and selenium were all significantly more effective than placebo at improving sperm motility, morphology, and concentration in men with idiopathic male infertility. L-carnitine ranked first for sperm motility and morphology; omega-3 ranked first for sperm concentration. Read the research
A 2023 network meta-analysis confirmed acupuncture as one of the most effective non-pharmaceutical interventions for improving sperm quality across all key parameters. Read the research
Sperm health is cellular health.
This is the most important thing to understand — and the thing almost nobody explains.
Sperm cells are among the most energetically demanding cells in the human body. They are produced continuously, developed over 74 days, and entirely dependent on the health of the cellular environment in which they form. Mitochondria — the energy-producing structures inside every cell — are the engine of sperm motility and DNA integrity. Anything that compromises mitochondrial function compromises sperm quality.
What compromises mitochondrial function? Oxidative stress. Nutritional deficiencies. Chronic inflammation. Poor sleep. Alcohol. Heat. Environmental toxins. Gut dysbiosis. Eczema. Systemic conditions that create a low-grade inflammatory state throughout the body.
This is why sperm health is not a separate issue from general health. It is a direct reflection of it. A man with gut problems, skin conditions, poor diet, disrupted sleep, or chronic stress is producing sperm in a compromised cellular environment — even if his semen analysis looks broadly normal. And a man who addresses those things systematically, with the right nutritional and clinical support, will produce meaningfully better sperm within the 74-day development window.
There is another dimension to this that is rarely discussed. The health and constitutional strength of a child is shaped 50% by egg quality and 50% by sperm quality at the time of conception. The investment a man makes in his cellular health before conception doesn't just affect whether pregnancy occurs — it shapes the foundation of his child's health. That is not a small thing. It deserves to be taken seriously.
WHAT KATIE’S APPROACH ADDRESSES
What a thorough fertility assessment looks like
The basic semen analysis is a starting point — not an answer.
↑ Oxidative stress and antioxidant status
Oxidative stress is the single most significant driver of sperm DNA damage. Free radicals attack sperm cell membranes and DNA, reducing motility, increasing abnormal morphology, and elevating DNA fragmentation — a marker the standard semen analysis does not measure. Katie's naturopathic assessment looks specifically at the oxidative burden and addresses it through targeted antioxidant therapy: CoQ10, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc in clinically appropriate forms and doses. The evidence base for this approach is now substantial.
↑ Mitochondrial function and cellular energy
CoQ10 is both an antioxidant and an essential co-factor in mitochondrial energy production. Sperm motility is entirely dependent on ATP — the energy produced by mitochondria. In men with poor progressive motility, CoQ10 deficiency is one of the most common and most addressable findings. Katie assesses and addresses this as part of every male fertility consultation.
↓ Systemic inflammation
Gut dysbiosis, skin conditions such as eczema, undiagnosed food sensitivities, and chronic low-grade infections all create systemic inflammation — and systemic inflammation directly impairs sperm production and quality. The gut-sperm connection is an emerging area of research that conventional urology does not address. Katie's naturopathic approach assesses and treats the inflammatory drivers that are silently compromising cellular health.
↑ Nutritional foundations — zinc, selenium, vitamin D, folate
Zinc is essential for testosterone production, sperm development, and DNA integrity. Selenium protects sperm from oxidative damage and supports healthy morphology. Vitamin D receptors are present throughout the male reproductive system — deficiency is strongly associated with poor sperm parameters. Folate contributes to sperm DNA methylation. None of these are tested in a standard fertility workup. All are testable, supplementable, and clinically significant.
↓ Lifestyle factors — heat, alcohol, sleep, and stress
Sperm are produced at a temperature slightly lower than core body temperature — which is why the testes sit outside the body. Heat exposure from laptops, saunas, hot baths, and tight clothing meaningfully reduces sperm production and increases DNA damage. Alcohol is directly toxic to sperm-producing cells. Sleep deprivation disrupts testosterone production. Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which suppresses the hormonal cascade that drives sperm development. These are modifiable. Katie maps them systematically and addresses them as part of every plan.
↑ Sperm quality through acupuncture — TCM assessment and treatment
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, male fertility is governed primarily by kidney energy — the foundational vitality that drives reproductive function. Katie's TCM assessment identifies the specific pattern present: kidney yang deficiency (low count, poor motility, cold presentation), damp-heat in the lower burner (inflammation, infection history, varicocele), or liver qi stagnation (stress, tension, hormonal disruption). Each pattern has a specific acupuncture protocol and, where appropriate, a targeted herbal formula. Research now confirms acupuncture improves sperm count, motility, morphology, and DNA integrity — through mechanisms including improved testicular blood flow, reduced oxidative stress, and hormonal regulation. WHAT YOU'RE PROBABLY DEALING WITH RIGHT NOW
The semen analysis came back — and the answer wasn't clear.
Or it came back normal. And things still aren't working.
Most men arrive at a male fertility consultation through one of two paths. The first: a semen analysis flagged poor count, low motility, or abnormal morphology. They've been told the results are concerning, handed a leaflet, and sent away without a clear plan. The second — in many ways more frustrating — the semen analysis came back within range. Everything looks fine. And yet conception isn't happening, or pregnancies aren't holding.
Both situations point to the same gap. The basic semen analysis is a blunt instrument. It tells you how many sperm there are, how they move, and whether they're the right shape. It does not tell you about DNA fragmentation. It does not measure oxidative stress. It does not assess the nutritional environment in which those sperm were produced. And it says nothing about the cellular health of the man producing them.
Sperm health is a window into overall cellular health. A man whose gut is inflamed, whose sleep is disrupted, whose diet is depleted, or whose stress response is running chronically is producing sperm in a compromised environment — and that environment shapes the quality of every sperm in that 74-day development cycle. Improving the environment improves the output.
The question is not just whether you can conceive. It is what the quality of that conception will be. Fifty percent of your child's constitutional health comes from the quality of the sperm at the moment of conception. That is worth addressing properly.
THE CLINICAL FRAMEWORK
How Katie approaches male fertility in clinic and in partnership
01
A full picture, not just a semen analysis
Katie's initial consultation with a male fertility patient covers semen analysis results in detail — including what the numbers actually mean beyond whether they fall within reference ranges. It also covers nutritional history, gut health, sleep, stress, alcohol and substance use, heat exposure, and any systemic health conditions that may be creating the inflammatory environment sperm are developing in. The TCM consultation runs alongside this, assessing pulse and tongue presentation to identify the TCM pattern driving the picture.
02
Testing that goes beyond the standard panel
Where functional testing is indicated, Katie can assess nutritional markers relevant to sperm production — zinc, selenium, vitamin D, folate, CoQ10 — alongside inflammatory markers and, where relevant, referral for sperm DNA fragmentation testing, which is not routinely offered through standard fertility workups but is available through specialist laboratories.
03
Treating the couple together
In most fertility presentations, both partners benefit from being seen. Katie's approach to the male partner is fully integrated with her approach to the couple — the treatment protocols are designed to work in parallel, with both partners working through their respective 74-day or 90-day preparation windows simultaneously. This is the most efficient and most effective approach. Partners do not need to attend the same appointment, but Katie works with both.
04
The 74-day commitment
Sperm take 74 days to develop. That is the window in which everything Katie works on — antioxidant status, mitochondrial support, inflammatory load, TCM treatment — has its effect. It is also the reason results are not immediate, but are reliable. A man who commits to the full 74-day protocol, makes the lifestyle changes, and attends regular acupuncture will produce meaningfully different sperm at the end of it.
"Sperm health is not a separate issue from general health. It is a direct expression of it. When I see a man with eczema, gut problems, poor sleep, and high stress, I'm seeing a cellular environment that is directly affecting sperm quality. Address those things — systematically, with the right support — and the sperm improve. Every time."
— Katie Kempthorne, Naturopath & TCM Acupuncturist · In practice since 2004
Sperm parameters improved — partner pregnant four months later
"My semen analysis came back with poor morphology and low progressive motility. My GP said we might need IVF. Katie took a completely different approach — looked at my diet, my gut, my sleep, and my overall health picture. She found significant oxidative stress and nutritional deficiencies, put me on a targeted protocol, and ran regular acupuncture. Four months later my results had improved significantly and my partner was pregnant naturally. I wish someone had done this investigation before we started talking about IVF."
— John, Auckland · 2023
Normal semen analysis. High DNA fragmentation. One investigation changed everything
"We'd been trying for eighteen months. My semen analysis was normal — count, motility, morphology, all fine. Katie was the one who suggested we look at DNA fragmentation. It was high. Nobody had mentioned this was even a test that existed. We worked on my antioxidant status, made significant lifestyle changes, and I had weekly acupuncture for three months. My fragmentation came down significantly. My partner conceived shortly after. The right investigation at the right time."
Treating the eczema and the gut changed the sperm
"I'd had eczema and gut problems most of my adult life. I didn't connect them to our fertility challenges — why would I? Katie explained that systemic inflammation affects cellular health, which affects sperm quality. We worked on my gut microbiome, reduced the inflammatory drivers, and ran acupuncture alongside. Within a couple of months my partner was pregnant. I came in thinking it was a sperm problem. It turned out it was a health problem — that happened to be affecting my sperm."
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BOOK
Four steps from assessment to results.
Most men who come to Katie for male fertility support have never had a thorough investigation of their reproductive health. By the end of the first consultation, the picture looks completely different.
Step 01
A 90-minute initial consultation
Your full health history, your semen analysis results, your diet, your gut, your sleep, your stress, your lifestyle — everything that shapes the cellular environment sperm are developing in. The TCM assessment runs alongside. By the end, Katie has a clear picture of what is driving the current results and what needs to change.
Step 02
Advanced testing where needed
Where gaps exist in the standard workup, Katie recommends targeted functional testing — nutritional markers, oxidative stress indicators, and, where indicated, sperm DNA fragmentation testing through a specialist referral. Not every man needs all of this. Those who do will leave with a clear plan for what the results mean and how to act on them.
Step 03
A personalised treatment plan
Targeted nutritional supplementation, dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, and acupuncture in the specific combination your presentation requires. Built around the 74-day sperm development window so that the timing of each intervention is deliberate.
Step 04
Ongoing support every step
Follow-up consultations track progress and adapt the plan. Katie works with both partners where relevant, ensuring the preparation windows align. At the end of the 74-day protocol, the picture should look meaningfully different.

Because a normal semen analysis tells you count, motility, and morphology — and nothing else. It does not measure DNA fragmentation, which is one of the most significant predictors of fertilisation failure and early pregnancy loss. It does not assess oxidative stress, which is the primary driver of sperm DNA damage. And it says nothing about the nutritional status, inflammatory load, or mitochondrial health of the man producing the sperm. A normal result rules out the most obvious problems. It does not confirm that everything is optimal. There is almost always room to meaningfully improve sperm quality — even when the standard analysis looks fine.
-
Yes — measurably and significantly. Sperm take 74 days to develop. Everything during that window affects the environment they develop in. Alcohol is directly toxic to Sertoli cells — the cells responsible for sperm production. Heat exposure from saunas, hot baths, and laptops on the lap elevates testicular temperature and directly impairs sperm development. Chronic stress suppresses the testosterone axis through cortisol elevation. A poor diet depletes the antioxidants — zinc, selenium, vitamin C, CoQ10 — that protect developing sperm from oxidative damage. These are not peripheral lifestyle factors. They are direct drivers of sperm quality. And they are all modifiable.
-
Yes — the evidence is now robust. A 2023 network meta-analysis confirmed acupuncture as one of the most effective non-pharmaceutical interventions for improving sperm quality across all key parameters: count, motility, morphology, and DNA integrity. The mechanisms are well understood — improved testicular blood flow, reduced oxidative stress in reproductive tissue, and regulation of the hormonal axis that drives sperm production. The effect is most pronounced with regular treatment over the full 74-day development window.

You can absolutely come in on your own — and Katie actively encourages men to seek assessment independently, without waiting for their partner to initiate it. That said, where both partners are working toward conception, Katie finds the best outcomes come from treating both in parallel through their respective preparation windows. If your partner is already working with Katie, a male fertility consultation can be added directly alongside. If not, both of you can start fresh together. Either way, coming in is the right first step.
-
The 74-day sperm development window is the relevant timeframe. Changes made today will be reflected in sperm quality 74 days from now. In practice, Katie typically recommends a full three-month protocol before re-testing, which allows for one complete cycle of development under the new conditions. Some men see meaningful improvement before the end of that window. The important thing is that the window is finite, predictable, and entirely within your control.
